MCP Just Got Its First Official Certification
If you’ve been anywhere near agentic AI development this year, you’ve run into MCP. Model Context Protocol has quietly become the standard way to wire AI applications up to external tools, data sources, and services, and adoption has been climbing fast: MCP’s Tier 1 SDKs are approaching half a billion downloads a month, and tool-call volume has grown roughly 98x since January.
Up until now, there hasn’t been a vendor-neutral way to prove you actually understand how it works. That changes with the Model Context Protocol Associate (MCPA), launched by the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), a Linux Foundation project.
What MCPA Covers
MCPA is a foundational, beginner-level certification. It doesn’t make you an MCP expert, but it validates that you understand the protocol’s internals well enough to build, integrate, and reason about MCP-based systems responsibly.
The exam is a 90-minute, online proctored, multiple-choice test across five domains:

- Prerequisites: none formally required, though Linux Foundation recommends familiarity with JSON-RPC-style protocols, LLM APIs, agentic patterns (ReAct, tool-use), and basic auth/security concepts (OAuth 2.1, API keys)
Note
The exam is based on MCP specification version 2026-07-28. If you’re prepping, study against that release rather than an older one.
Who This Is For
If your day-to-day already involves connecting LLMs to tools, building agent workflows, or making decisions about what an agent is allowed to touch, this is a reasonable way to put a name on that knowledge. It’s aimed at engineers, platform builders, and increasingly AI governance roles, since a chunk of the exam (24%) is specifically about trust boundaries, permissions, and safety controls, not just wiring things together.
